Helping Out at the Prom and Your Opinion

We know that your school prom is a unique experience.  It’s one of the first occasions you and your friends will get together to look glamorous and have fun. It’s also an emotional time as for many students; it marks the end of your school years.  The importance of the school prom should not be underestimated, for many students it represents an end to their school life and the opportunity to celebrate their achievements and friendships.

ORGANISING YOUR PROM

School Proms are usually put together by a student committee.

There is a teacher adviser who knows the routine or has been given all of the information.

The teacher adviser will allocate jobs to the students and expect that they will be completed.

It's quite normal for venues not to allow school proms, so don't be disappointed if you approach venues who are unable to take your event.  Look for venues and companies who have experience in working on school proms and can offer you the best service.  One of the best ways to ensure that a venue will take your booking is to guarantee adult supervision/attendance.  Talk with your teachers and see if you can arrange for teachers to attend in  a supervisory capacity - they might even enjoy themselves!

Some venues will only agree to school proms during the week.  So if a mid-week booking is offered to you then it's advisable to book.

Whilst it might have seemed a touch more special to have your prom at a nice hotel, why not have your prom at school?

There are lots of ways that you can make your prom night special and many companies that will help you theme your evening.  Talk to your school about the possibility of holding the prom at school , it won't necessarily cost less than a hotel (by the time you've added those special touches) but  it could be the ideal solution.

Organising a School Prom can be extremelly hard work but given the right direction, you could have a fabulous night.

SCHOOL PROMS IN YOUR AREA

Picture the scene, handsome young men in smart tuxedos step out of stretch limousines. Groups of beautiful girls with flowing ball gowns, styled hair, dazzling jewellery and perfect nails.   Hollywood glamour, the camera flashes as you walk the red carpet – it could be Oscar’s night!  The stars of the evening are the school-leavers celebrating the end of their exams

"Proms are becoming a bigger and bigger across the UK. The glitzy approach is great for school-leavers and good business for prom gowns, suit hire, hairdressers, florists, beauty parlours and limousine companies who are finding themselves unable to cope with the
level of demand “ said Anita of thebestschoolprom.co.uk

Prom Planning Timetable

A little planning beforehand can ensure you of a great prom night with few problems or last-minute hassles. The only things you want to think about on the day and night of your prom are how beautiful you look and how much fun you’re having.

You can follow the timetable below for your perfect prom:

One to 4 months in advance:
• Start looking at fashion magazines and stores for the look you want.
• Begin shopping for your prom dress, shoes, jewellery and tiara
• Once you have chosen your dress, be sure to schedule any necessary alterations.
Organise who you will travel with and book your limo.

One month before:
• If you are having your hair or makeup done professionally for the big day, schedule appointments at the salon. Be sure not to schedule anything too late in the afternoon so you have plenty of time to get dressed and ready.
• If you are doing your hair and/or makeup yourself, begin collecting ideas for hairstyles and shopping for makeup shades to match your dress.

Two weeks before
Contact the limo company to confirm that they have your booking.

One week before:
• Try your dress on one more time with your shoes and jewellery.
• Walk around your house a little (including up and down stairs) for a quick comfort check on the dress and shoes.
• If possible, have a friend take a couple of pictures of you from different angles to see if your outfit is working.
• Buy stockings and/or any other small items you may need to complete your prom outfit.
• Shop for the perfect lip and nail colours to complement your dress.
prom planning
• Call to confirm your hair and makeup appointments.

One day before:
• Check that you have film or batteries for your camera. You will definitely want to capture some images of you and your friends on the big night.
• If you are doing your hair and makeup yourself, do a trial run on your chosen style to catch any problems that may come up and to time the process.

• Prepare your bag the night before to make sure you have everything you will need. You should think about having, extra lip colour and gloss, perfume, an all-in-one makeup compact for minor touch-ups, a bit of extra cash, and a phone.

Prom day:

Get reading in plenty of time and be ready for collection - it can easily take you two hours to get ready - enjoy!

Prom on a budget

With a little bit of planning and creativity, the prom doesn't have to cost a fortune. Here are a few less expensive options:

Try renting or borrowing a dress or paying for them in installments if you don't want to blow a wad of cash. The January sales always have some excellent Christmas party gowns at discounted rates.

Think about borrowing jewellery from  family members and if you can't
afford a trip to a beauty salon go to Superdrug or Boots with a friend
and treat yourselves to some new beauty supplies. You can spend
the afternoon helping one another  trying out styles.  Ask a friend/family to help style your hair.

If you need to ask a parent or other family member for help with your finances, offer to make up the cash by doing jobs around the house like mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, or babysitting your little brother or sister. Sometimes parents are happy to help with some expenses - such as a limo that means they won't have to worry about how you'll get home.  If you can't afford a limo, ask a family friend who has a flashy car.

Photo’s
You can add something special to your school prom night with a prom photographer that will cost you absolutely nothing!

You’ll get an exceptional package that includes a professional photographer, on-site printing facilities and special mounts for each photograph.

For a small charge your guests can take away their chosen individual and group photographs the same evening!

It really adds something to the event and becomes a talking point during the evening.

Your event photographer will take photographs of couples, individual and group shots during the evening that can be viewed and printed while you wait.

The photos are presented in specialist mounts and are available for sale at a very competitive price. There is no obligation to buy. Your guests can buy additional photographs online or friends and family may choose to buy at a later date.
If you’re holding a School Prom or celebrating your Special Event, the one thing that holds your memories in place is the photography. Your guests will want to have these visual memories to keep, so you need a really experienced event photographer to ensure that the photographs convey the images that your guests will treasure.

The Dress

Let's face it, half the point of prom is getting all dressed up for once. If you've been in search of a dress (and I'm sure you have,) then you've noticed just how many different kinds there are! Here's my overview of the different kinds of dresses you'll find.

The "Jardon" dresses. - the skirt poofs out. Crinolin is usually the fablic underneath the dresses that makes them stand out. (Crinolin is essentially like stiff nylon netting.) Some dresses have only one layer or two of crinolin, others can have seven or eight layers. "Jardon" dresses are either strapless or have spaghetti straps. Some may have plain "straight-cut" necklines, but others have a sweetheart neckline. (A sweetheart neckline is like a low cut V neck. It can only be done with a strapless.) Lace-up "corset" backs are very popular this year. Lace-up backs can either give the dress a modern Victorian twist or a playful flirting feel to the dress.

- Sheath dresses. These are the dresses you'll find most often. They are straight cut dresses that usually have low necklines and cut backs. They are often clingy or tight-fitting. Sometimes they are plain, but most times they will be beaded or have a printed design. They almost always have spaghetti straps. Some also have slits in the back or side.

Hair:

Hair is made out to be a major part of prom, but it's not life or death. Most girls make an appointment with their stylist to have their hair done the day of prom. Truthfully, many of them hate the results and go home, cry, and end up doing it over themselves..

With this cheerful news in mind, what should you do? Remember, no one will do you hair the exact way you like, unless they've done it before.

So, choose a hairdresser carefully or why not do it yourself? It may take a little more time, but chances are you'll make up for it by not having your hair done twice.

1. After picking out your prom dress, try it on and have your mum or a friend take pictures of you in it. Be sure to get clear front and back shots. You'll then be able to match shoes and a bag.  It will also mean that you don't  have to keep trying it on.

2. Do you have a hair style already in mind? Try it with your dress on. There's no point in getting an open-back dress if your long hair just cover it. Also see how the style goes with your neckline. Is it flattering or do you look too old, too curly or just too serious.

3. If you don't have any ideas, you can ask a friend to help you put your hair up or make a short appointment with your stylist. Bring the pictures and get her input. If you're a frequent customer, the stylist usually won't charge you anything for this.

4. Three weeks before the prom, colour/perm your hair if it's in your plans. If there's a disaster, you'll have time to work it out.

5. Three weeks before the prom, do a dress rehearsal. Do everything just the way you want for your prom. If your hair accessories don't match or break, then you've got time to replace them. This also prevents a last-minute panic and discovering your style doesn't work on prom day.

6. Prom day! Do your hair after your makeup. If something goes wrong, don't stress! You'll just make it worse. Brush it out and try again.

Make-up:
So, you're almost ready. You've got your dress, shoes, jewellery, bag, and maybe even a date! Now you think the only thing you have left to tackle is your makeup.

Now, you don't need much makeup for prom! Don't slap it on as if you're going to be in the Christmas panto. You're going to be dancing - and sweating (glowing!) - on the dance floor for at least four hours, so the chances of much makeup actually lasting are slim. Here's what to do to instead.

1. Start off with a foundation. You could mix this with a little moisturiser so it's not as "thick"

2. Use a concealer wherever needed.

3. Use blush if necessary.

4. Apply mascara and light eye makeup. A liitle lip gloss or lipstick

5. Touch on face glitter lightly if you're going to use it

6. Dust with a light powder.

7. Add a great matching shade of lipstick or lip gloss for a complete look! And remember to slip the lip colour in your purse for later!

8. When your face gets shiny as the evening progresses, don't just keep caking on powder. Go into the wash room, blot your face  with tissue  and lightly re-apply powder.
